I came across a honey-based ketchup recipe today that is easy and delicious to make.  It is much healthier than commercial ketchup, which is made with high-fructose corn syrup, corn syrup and natural flavors.

In my research, ‘natural flavors’ is a term used in ingredient labels that can include MSG (Monosodium Glutamate), Aspartame, and other questionable ingredients you may not want to consume.  Commercial ketchup also contains lots of sugars.  Notice the ketchup ingredient label image below and see that it lists high-fructose corn syrup and then more corn syrup again!

6 oz can organic tomato paste

¼ cup raw honey

½ cup apple cider vinegar

¼ cup water

¾ tsp sea salt

¼ tsp organic onion powder

1/8 tsp organic garlic powder

  • Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and whisk until smooth over over medium heat.
  • Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to a simmer.  Simmer 20 minutes, stirring often.
  • Remove from heat, place a lid over saucepan and let cool.
  • Store in a pretty canning jar or other covered container in the refrigerator.
