The last step of our 31 Days to a Healthier You series is super easy—rinse your body with cold water at the end of your morning shower. The practice of taking contrast or cold showers has been around since ancient times. If the idea of alternating hot and cold showers sounds extreme to you, don’t worry—once you get used to it, you will wonder why you haven’t done it before!

What’s the Benefit of Contrast Showers?

Alternating hot and cold water while bathing is called a contrast shower and the best part of it is that it makes you feel energized and rejuvenated.  Apart from that, contrast showers have a far more tangible health benefits as they can:

  • Relieve symptoms of arthritis, respiratory infections and high blood pressure
  • Stimulate male and female hormone production and boost pain relief
  • Enhance the immune system through sudden temperature swings
  • Improve blood circulation and the body’s antioxidant functioning
  • Improve the texture of the skin

The Benefits of Cold Showers

How to Take Contrast Showers?

All you need to do is alternate hot with cold water. Always start with hot water and always end your bath with cold. The hot water should be as hot as you can tolerate—up to 100F. The same applies for the cold water. It could be as low as 60F. These cycles should be repeated at least twice for a full effect.

If you can’t tolerate very cold water, start with cooler temperature and bring it down gradually in every following shower.
